Cat5e

Category 5, was ratified as a standard in the 1990’s. It specified test criteria at a set of signalling frequencies up to 100MHz, which were more than adequate for the commonest transmission application, Fast Ethernet delivering 100Mbits/sec. In the late 1990’s a more comprehensive set of test criteria were proposed for a higher performance solution.
One feature of the new tests included signalling frequencies to 250Mhz, and the complete characteristics would be more than adequate to handle Gigabit Ethernet which was emerging at that time. These test criteria formed the basis of Cat6. At the same time work was carried out to enhance the cat 5 standard and this became known as Cat5e.
